How Does This Work?
So you caught wind of a casting call at a place called Valley of the Moon, and you’re wondering what this entails? Well, allow me to fill you in on what exactly to expect!
The first thing to know is that we aren’t your typical theatre; Valley of the Moon is a fairyland park and historic landmark that has existed for over a century and is run mostly by volunteers. We have a long-running tradition of giving creative, fantastical tours of the park in the form of plays. This means the audience follows a character through the park as the story unfolds, each scene being set in a different area. And because we do multiple shows, or tours, per night, audiences and actors alike will get a unique experience every performance.

A Call for All Comers
We don’t hold auditions in the traditional sense. If you show up to try for a character in the show, you are cast! It’s that simple. No experience is necessary, you just read for the parts you are interested in. By the way, we have a part for everyone, regardless of skill level.
Character parts range from ensemble roles with few to no spoken lines, which is perfect for wee ones who aren’t quite reading yet, to tour guides who often have the most lines and guide audiences safely from one scene to the next.
Not much for performance? No problem! You can also volunteer to build set pieces, create and assign props, and/or sew costumes. If you’re not super skilled in these areas and have a desire to build those skills, we have you covered there, too. You see, when I say we have a part for everyone, I mean EVERYONE!

Flexible Scheduling
Rehearsals are Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 8pm, last seven weeks, and begin the weekend immediately following the casting call. The run (performances of the show) is three weekends in April for the spring show, four weekends in October for the fall show. In other words, it’s a pretty big time sink (cue theatre people laughing).

Not to worry! We all have lives outside of theatre, so you will have the opportunity to tell the show leadership team what days you will not be available. We typically have enough actors in a show that you won’t be expected to show up every single night of the run, and more than anything, we want to respect your personal time.
Please be sure to double check your calendar by the end of the casting call weekend so you can accurately communicate your availability with the leadership team. Just as well, if new conflicts arise or you need to withdraw from the show, we just ask that you let the leadership know.

Inclusivity & Community
At Valley of the Moon, we have a motto: Kindness to all is the golden key to happiness. This means it is vitally important to us that we foster a welcoming, safe community. Our volunteers run the gamut of lived experiences, and the characters in our shows are generally gender, race, and age neutral so that anyone can portray virtually any character. I’ll say it a third time: we have a role for EVERYONE!!!
And in the event that you feel unsafe with someone or witness someone being unkind, you can speak to any member of leadership in confidence and rest assured that the issue won’t happen again.

Through our theatrical program, Valley of the Moon has become a home to many, many people, and we want you to join us! Of course, our brand of theatre isn’t for everyone, and that is okay.
