Frequently Asked Questions
GENERAL
Who owns Valley of the Moon?
!n 1945 George Legler created a nonprofit to own and operate Valley of the Moon. This is now known as The George Phar Legler Society, Inc. and is fully tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Where do you get the money to stay open?
Valley of the Moon has always had a donation box and many folks leave small donations. Some money comes in from our modest ticket sales. We are very appreciative of our grants and business sponsors. For detailed information see SUPPORT!
VISITING
When are you open? / What are your hours of operation?
We are open on the First Saturday and the Third Sunday of each month. Seasonally we offer adventure shows. You can also find preservation workshops and wellness offerings at Valley of the Moon. For details see the Visit! section,
Why aren't you open every day or every weekend?
Our volunteers are working hard to put on our current quality programming. As we get more human and material resources we can open the gates more often.
Will you supervise our kids?
No, parents must supervise their children. Valley of the Moon is a safe place but we can't babysit. We are an outdoor park and there are natural hazards.
Are there any rules we should know about?
At Valley of the Moon everyone is expected to treat others with respect and kindness. We don't want anyone to get hurt so we ask that you walk on pathways. If it's OK with guardians, children can run and cartwheel on the lawn. No one should damage, lean against or endanger the historic structures. Be aware 95 year old concrete can be fragile.
Are you handicap accessible?
Here's the good news: The northside of our property is decked out with decomposed gravel pathways designed for mobility impaired access by a landscape architect who himself sported a wheelchair. We also have parking spots that can accomodate van and sedan parking using ADA standards. We have an accessible bathroom and sympathetic staff.
Now the less good news: Our storyland was built long before ADA standards and there are some challenges for mobility impaired folks getting into the south historic area. Specifically, we have a section that is accessible by a pretty steep slope. Some folks in wheelchairs can make this just fine; others, particularly those with heavy battery powered chairs, find the possibility of becoming unstable a safety risk. There is an alternative entry that has 3 stone steps. Volunteer can usually help by giving individualized support. We are committed to improving access for mobility impaired folks into the south end of the property but we need to save significant funds to accomplish this.
Can I bring my pet?
Only service dogs are welcomed. Service dogs are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people living with disabilities and their presence can be critical. Pets, including comfort animals, are not permitted. We love animals but fear that it only takes one exuberant or aggressive pet, or a fearful human, to cause a big problem.
Can I bring my gun?
Guns and other weapons are prohibited.
How about smoking?
Smoking cigarettes, pipes, cigars or e-cigarettes is only permitted by the street, outside the parking lot gates.
Should I leave a donation?
We don't want anyone to feel pressured or worry they shouldn't come because they don't have a donation. Valley of the Moon is here for everyone. If you are fortunate enough to have some money you can spare for a donation, we certainly appreciate it. We have an excellent track record of using donations for the right stuff: programming and preservation of the historic structures.
EVENTS
Do you cancel when bad weather is expected?
We will cancel an event when it is unsafe, such as when lightning is nearby. Valley of the Moon is often lucky enough to miss the rain storm hitting other parts of town. We check out what the weather is on site, close to the event. If we close we will post it on Facebook.
Do I have to stay with a group led by a docent during 3rd Sundays?
Yes.
PRIVATE EVENTS
Can I use your chairs and tables?
We rent chairs for $1 each and 6' x 4' tables for $7 each
Can I install a bouncy house at Valley of the Moon?
No.
Can I bring my own food?
Sure!
Can I bring alcohol?
Alcohol is only permitted if the event is given individual approval at a governance meeting.
Can I play music?
We love acoustic music. Amplification of voice is permitted. A staff person can help you make sure it isn't set so loud it bothers our neighbors. Recorded music can be used at a very low volume, equivalent to normal conversation.
Can I have open access to the historic area?
You can make individual arrangements to have sufficient volunteers to allow free access but it would require an additional fee. The fee would depend on how many people are attending your event.
Can those attending the event have a tour of the historic area?
Unless there are unusual circumstances, that can be arranged.
Will you supervise our kids?
No, parents must supervise their children.
What is the deposit for?
Event deposits are held to cover any damages. Deposits are otherwise refundable.
